Magpie Tales

Painted Ladies

Between,
in the interval
that separates
two,
like bubbles 'twixt
your bathing feet,
subtly parted
by the drip
from the faucet
I need to fix.

What drip is it
that keeps us
apart,
we two who know
each other so well?

Your toes
above the suds,
ruby nails
like painted ladies,
catch my eye,
inviting me
to explore
the interval
that lies
between.

  1. Wow, this is an amazing poem, you have made the idea of a bubble bath completely thought provoking! Wonderful writing! :-)

  2. I like the introspective thoughts in this piece - they go well below the surface water...

  3. Wonderfully romantic in a lovely, familiar, conversational way. I adore the evocative notion of the toes as painted ladies. Wow, Linthead, you're good.

  10. Love it!! I have to laugh at some of the male stereotypes you've supported. A woman sees a relaxing moment... a man sees a leaky faucet he needs to fix!

    The last line is tantalizing!

  13. 'we two who know
each other so well?' Reheating an old romance, and so you should. But don't put it off to fix the drip or it won't be the only drip in the room!

  14. Precisely, Stafford Ray! I definitely had the double meaning of "drip" in mind. Thanks to all y'all. Baths can be steamy affairs, what can I say?
