A Bleak Magpie

Hunger Pangs
by Lemuel Crouse

Look at them grazing...
Sipping coffee black and
Gnawing on white bread
Sandwiches at mid-day.

Not cursed with vampyric
Pallor, they...rather
tan, accustomed to sitting
in sunlight once in awhile.

I would smile at them
From my dark alcove but
Methinks they would not
Return the kindness...ha!

Wait, I shall, until night
blindness takes them
And then I will have my
Fill of dark, steamy draught.

Painting of Rainer Maria Rilke
Born 12/4/1875
Artist Unknown
(VERY vampyric, don't you think?)
Thanks, tk (!)

  1. I like your vampire's point of view. I guess I am twisted a bit too.

  2. That's it--you are not allowed
to watch any more steamy episodes
of TRUE BLOOD. What a lovely
and macabre twist on the Orwellian
image prompt. Many of us have
sunk our fangs into poetics that
    may have started out virginal,
but like dear Bella, have suddenly
    been turned into something darker.

  3. I cut my teeth on Stoker, devoured Anne Rice, and will ever adore Joss Whedon for the delicious, deadly Buffy. Can't say I've gone beyond that into the world of Twilight or Sookie Stackhouse.

  5. A darkly well-written poem. Impressive and Rilke-ish.
