My father had an ongoing war with squirrels. He would hide in the den, where we had birdfeeders, tucked in the corner, waiting. He'd taken the screen out of the crank out window, opened that window so slightly and he simply sat scrunched against the wall. As soon as one landed he would squirt it with his supersonic power squirt gun that had just the barest bit of nasty smelling stuff in it.

The squirrel would leap straight up run down to the ground, then back up and just yarp like HELL at my father, so Dad would squirt him again. There was a HUGE one in particular that looked as if something had bitten a chunk out of its ear. That was the one that would always come back up. Sometimes when DAd was working at his desk, that squirrel would just chatter at him, hanging upside down off the frame of the window near his desk.

My dad shot rubber bands at them. He put a little bit of tobasco on a corn cob once but when he saw them get sick he got terribly upset and never did that again.

And when he found notch-ear on the ground by the willow about five years after we'd moved there, he cried. He took down the feeder and simply said, "It's not fun any more."

THANK YOU. I had not thought of that in about twenty-five years. Not in full detail until I looked at your pictures. I hope you don't mind my rant. Thank you so much.

Squirrels do live up to their names.... yours look well fed.... it probably makes them more squirrelly. I had one with his head in my eaves trough this evening... looking for a drink of water I expect. It's been raining here. They go up across my roof to avoid Linds.

Jeannette, I am so honored by your rant! Thank you for sharing...thank you so very much! Squirrels have fairly short lives...your father was fortunate to have notch-ear as his nemesis for so long. I have tears in my eyes and a smile on my face, now :-)

Glad you liked the pics, Ellen :-)

Linda, I'll bet Linds is hell on squirrels :-)
