Waiting...

Beloved old sled,
Hanging neglected
In the tool shed, waiting…
Like a little boy,
Longing for a sledding snow…
Like a teenager,
Longing for a break from school…
Like a weary mother,
Longing for a carefree morning…
Like an angry nation,
Longing for bygone prosperity…
Like a desperate world,
Longing for a sign that Someone
Hears the prayers of the poor…
Like a careworn writer,
Longing for a story
With a happy ending…
Will this be the day?

This is a Magpie Tale.  To read more, click here!

As the list proceeded I was more delighted by surprise each time. This is good and anything that brings it back to writing is great to me.

I like the thought of the angry nation...Maeve Binchy has written a thoughtful piece in todays Times about the beloved Ireland. It has been such a brief dance with success and money and now it's all gone through the floor into some rich grey-suited pockets. Well we'shall see how the hill slides away in furure!

Why is it that waiting is so hard for humans? That dreaded limbo, not moving backward or forward.

Tess,

The economist in my head says it's our struggle with opportunity cost: what am I missing out on while I'm waiting for whatever it is I'm waiting for.

The scientist in my head says it's "merely" the way the human brain is wired...and a large part of what drives many of us to accomplish remarkable things, for good or ill.

The psychologist in my head says it's a way of dealing with our finitude: we are all going to die and, being human, we know this, so we want LIFE and we want it NOW!

The theologian in my head is saying that we recognize our incompleteness and thus impatiently long for that which will make us whole. We want Presence and we want it now and always!

We are a hot mess, are we not?

I like the repetition here, it works well with your words. Good question on the end! Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful!

We have our old Flexible Flyers from so many years ago waiting and waiting for grandchildren (which we don't have yet). At least they get brought out for display during the Christmas season.
